The BC SPCA should balance its books, says Port Coquitlam city council.
Monday, council voted to send a letter to the group, which it has a contract with to supply animal control services until 2008.
According to its unaudited financial report, the SPCA recorded a $4.5 million deficit in 2002. The city also is asking for audited statements for 2003 and beyond.
"We believe that an organization relying on to a great extent on donations and fundraising should be audited annually, and this is in fact a requirement of the Society Act," a PoCo staff report states.
