From the BC SPCA, 1999:
Veterinarians Express Concern Over Exotics

A recent survey of BC veterinarians regarding their views on exotic animals revealed that 92% believe owners of exotic pets at the time of purchase are not well informed about what their pet needs to stay healthy. Over 75% of veterinarians are not comfortable with the current practice of buying and selling of exotics with 68% saying they would support legislation at the provincial or municipal level that would restrict the buying and selling of exotic animals. Once in the country, there are currently no regulations for the breeding and selling of exotic animals whether endangered or not. It should be noted that less than 10% of the 1000-plus BC veterinarians returned our survey, however, their comments support the need for more education around the keeping of exotics and the continued pressure to discourage people – children and adults – from purchasing these animals as pets. Information kits for Branches are currently being prepared along with a public brochure and should be available this fall.

There may be a brochure that actually discourages the owning of exotics, not just tells how they are supposed to be looked after (thereby condoning owning them), but not one that we are aware of.

Will this be the real humane education the SPCA has never had?
