Our letter to Patricia Graham

Dear Ms Graham,

Please consider increasing the Sun's coverage on issues of SPCA accountability. There are many issues, all of which are of interest to animal-lovers and SPCA donators, which means to several million people in BC.

Here are the issues that our Society hopes you will cover in-depth:

1. The SPCA is making illegal seizures. It is seizing animals in contravention of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act (PCA Act). It is killing some of the animals it "heroically rescues" once the media moves on. Others it gives back to the "abuser" if its inflated "seizure costs" are paid. Others, innocent of the charges and maliciously prosecuted, have their homes seized. I will forward you detailed information and proof on this issue.

2. The BC SPCA has never submitted the audited financial statements that the PCA Act requires it to do. Government excuses this and refuses to do a forensic audit.

3. The BC SPCA lies repeatedly to the media and the public. Every press release about some program the SPCA claims to be doing, is almost entirely false.

4. The PCA Act protects the SPCA from public enquiry and so it is not "open, accountable, and transparent" as it claims. Government must be made to remove this protection.

5. The SPCA is obtaining millions of dollars in donations fraudulently by misrepresenting itself in press releases, email bulletins, and its magazine "Animal Sense".

I am an admirer of Daphne Bramham, for her honesty, her writing skills, and also because of the series she wrote on factory farming in Canada and in particular, the article she wrote on Tina Harrison, the founder of Canadians for the Ethical Treatment of Food Animals, a woman whose memory I hold in particular esteem. I don't presume to tell you who you should choose should you decide to put a staff writer on this issue, but I do think Daphne Bramham could do an award-winning job.

Sincerely,
Judy Stone, President
