Frozen to Death, Shy But Happy “Dorado” Now in a Happier Place

A dead sled dog in Qaanaaq, Northwest Greenland.

In Qaanaaq, and elsewhere in Greenland, sled dogs are killed by their owners, or for no fee by the town’s licensed “dog killer,” when they become too old or sick to work. In addition, because climate change has already shortened the period of time each year when hunters can use dog sleds, some hunters kill their dogs (or request that it be done by the town’s dog killer) when it becomes too expensive to feed them. The so-called “mercy killing” of dogs in Qaanaaq (aka Thule), Northwest Greenland, is so common that the corpse of this animal lying alongside a heavily used walking route didn’t even attract any attention from passersby.
