I would also thank the decent vets, especially those who charge significantly less than the prices that the BCVMA Fee Guide suggests. Vets are not forced to charge fee guide prices but many of them do to the exact cent. I am pleased that many people are now becoming aware of these fee guides. It is so important to have independent animal hospitals with a wide variety of prices in all areas of the province and across the country.
These British Colombia Veterinary Association fee guide prices have gone up about 5% per year since I first got them- a steady upward trend. The cost of living index has gone up about 2% per year. I have the 1999, 2002, 2005 editions and the new 2007 one which has been released recently. There have been steady price increases across the board. Many vets charge the EXACT suggested rates. The suggested check-up rate is $57.50, up from $52.90 in 2005, just under a 10% increase.
The main veterinary offices in the central Parksville/Qualicum area (Mid-Isle, Bellevue, Oceanside, and Qualicum Animal Hospital) all charge $57.50 to clients before any items are added. You get a rate of $57.25, a saving of 25 cents at the Parksville Animal Hospital. Clients in this area have little to choose price-wise. Why did they all choose these prices?
On the mainland I think there are many more options. As prices rise, more and more clients are being priced right out of the veterinary market, which is a tragedy for our animals. More and more animals do not get the veterinary care that they need.
