Animal Advocates Watchdog

In civilized societies the hangman is out of a job too

Letter to the editor:

Somehow I doubt that Mr. Grieco would see fit to completely reverse his opinion of trapping animals if he were to follow Mr. Johnstone on his rounds to collect the wolf carcasses. More than likely, Mr. Grieco would be even further convinced of the torture that these innocent animals have endured.

Nor it is likely that Mr. Johnstone would be able to have a reasonable, informative discussion about the merits of killing animals in the face of continued opposition.

The point, Mr. Johnstone, is that even under the shroud of words such as: "tradition, identity" the killing of other beings is just plain wrong.

Mr. Johnstone also mentions that this is his livelihood - a much more accurate description of why hunters and trappers doggedly persist in their murderous ways.

Over the centuries, many occupations have gone by the wayside in the name of progress and enlightenment. Humans have adapted and turned to other, and in many cases, more ethical and humane ways of making a living. I'm sure there was much grumbling and resistance when those people manning torture chambers were fired as society finally woke up their consciences and demanded change.

Can we do any less for those who are unable to raise their voices themselves? Society has such a long way to go in preventing cruelty to every living being, and it is long past the time for hunting and trapping to be seen in the proper light and join those outdated professions we have left behind forever.

What? NO CAMERA allowed on this fun trapline tour?...doesn't sound like much fun.
