It's hard for most to understand that horses are livestock, not pets
In Response To: Re: No Room at the Pen ()

Sadly, everyone knows the root of the problem, just as we know the root of the problem with companion animals but yet we don't see irresponsible breeders ceasing in their irresponsible practices do we? As much as I know most people don't like the idea of horse slaughter as least there is a last option for them as a food source and not ending up in the garbage as our companion animals do. Human greed really is the root of most problems but as we know, that won't end.

Horses to many are still a business not pets, they are a livestock and I know that's hard for many to understand but that's the way it is and has been for many years and will continue to be. It's a money driven industry. Thankfully most PMU farms are gone, but the irresponsible breeder still exists and probably always will, without a place to put horses there will be a problem. People in the US are scrambling and the stories are heart breaking. As much as I hate slaughter myself, horses today are suffering because of the lack of slaughter houses and I hate to see them suffer at all. People don't know what to do or don't have the resources. A plan needs to be in place before shutting down the one major option people had, even if it's not a great option to some.

It all goes back to be careful what you wish for. Many here in Canada are looking to see our slaughter houses shut down, but until there is a viable option in place with a serious plan to assist those that can't afford to PTS or care for their animal they better not do what they did in the US.
