SIGN A PETITION TO SUPPORT C-373!
Following the success of Tamara Chaney’s petition rejecting Bill S-203 (which gathered nearly 112,000 names and was tabled in Parliament in mid-February), a new petition is now circulating calling for the government to introduce effective amendments to the animal cruelty provisions of the Criminal Code based on Bill C-373.

Dear Member of Parliament,

I am asking you today, to vote against Bill S-203 when it comes up for Third Reading vote this spring.

Canada’s federal animal cruelty law is archaic and full of loopholes that allow many animal abusers to escape prosecution. It was written in 1892 and does not properly protect animals from cruelty or does it reflect the views of today’s society. Our current law is far behind the laws of other developed and even less-developed countries.

Bill S-203 is NOT good enough. It will NOT make the necessary changes needed to close the gaping loopholes. In fact, S-203 is merely 1892 legislation simply adjusted for inflation. All it will do is increase penalties. There is no point increasing penalties when so many cases can’t even be prosecuted, let alone convicted.

If S-203 passes, it will be much harder to bring forward the amendments that are so badly needed. We must stop S-203 to pave the way for a bill, similar to C-373. Let’s not forget that, just a few years ago, a bill virtually identical to C-373 had the support of animal protection groups, animal use industries, veterinarians and all parties in the House of Commons. So, why are politicians now supporting a useless bill that will not improve protection for animals from cruelty and abuse?

I ask you to think of all the animals that have been starved to death, burned in microwaves, beaten, bound and dragged behind cars. They need a law that will protect them from such heinous acts of cruelty — and S-203 is NOT it.

Sincerely,

http://cfhs.ca/law/what_can_you_do/
