Interesting article in the Globe and Mail about Vancouver [Olympics] Organizing Committee president losing sleep over potential of activists protesting the upcoming Vancouver Olympics (and its torch relay) in order to promote their causes.
[Excerpt from article]
"The committee has so far enjoyed one of the most controversy-free runups to a Games in Olympic history. As well, Canada does not have human-rights issues or a domestic situation as contentious as Tibet around which protesters might be tempted to rally.
Nonetheless, the Olympics are a worldwide event and, therefore, a forum for professional dissenters, not to mention those with legitimate grievances, to call attention to their causes. Images of the torch relay are beamed around the world. For the determined, the cameras that cover it can be used to draw attention to a disparate range of issues."
I would venture to say that this is a prime opportunity (not to be missed) to protest the annual seal slaughter and the booming Canadian fur trade (and our abysmal national animal protection laws in general).
Thank you Paul Watson for being on the front lines fighting against animal cruelty!
