There's going to be a debate in the Senate starting in a few days on
the seal hunt. Liberal Senator Marc Harb will introduce legislation
effectively ending the commercial seal hunt while respecting the
treaty obligations and protecting the rights of Canada's Aboriginal
people. He says last year's $7 million hunt divided among the 6,000
estimated sealers an average of about $1,100 each, before expenses. He
says that comes to a much higher cost to our country and the
individuals involved. He notes that many European countries have
already either banned seal product trade or are about to vote on such
a move. He believes the Chamber of sober second thought is the ideal
forum for such a debate. It would not carry any legal obligation on
the part of the federal government.
