BC SPCA POLICY STATEMENT

Revised: October 2000

#10 - RODEOS

The BC SPCA condemns rodeo exhibitions that inflict mental anxiety and physical torment on the participating animals. Contests that exploit animals through the use of special rigging to alter their behavior are unacceptable. Events that induce distress, fear, pain, risk causing injury, and/or death to the animals be prohibited.

Rodeo Circuits: CPRA [Canadian Professional Rodeo Association]; BC Rodeo Association; Indian Rodeo Association; High School Rodeos; All Girls Rodeo; Private Rodeos; Little Britches Rodeo; Special Events [Bulloramas]

Rodeo Events: Primary competitions - saddle bronc riding; bareback; bull riding; calf roping; steer wrestling. Others - barrel racing; team roping; chuck wagon racing; boy's steer riding; calf scramble; wild colt scramble; wild cow milking; wild horse race and others.

High Risk Events: Competitions which involve wrestling, muscling, roping and throwing or roping and subduing the stock.
