Watching for signs of real reform by the BC SPCA is like watching paint dry, nevertheless we have never stopped watching.
Shortly after Craig Daniell was hired to start enforcing the PCA Act (something the SPCA had diligently dodged doing in the past) AAS defended what to many others seemed some dishonesty in the way Mr Daniell was doing this. We continued to defend him through the Christmas Terrier incident even after we found out that he dishonestly told the complainants that the Act prevented him from pinning the blame on the manager. (See the whole story at http://www.animaladvocates.com/Watchdog/PrisonCampForAnimals.htm). We argued that for Mr Daniell to open this incident to the media would do irreparable damage to the SPCA and that we wanted a strong SPCA so that it has the money to prevent cruelty and do real animal welfare. We urged others to adopt our view.
The others were right. Mr Daniell again misrepresented the Act, on TV, to justify the return of severely neglected dogs to a puppymiller after being paid around $11,000. At that point we finally gave up trying to explain away Mr Daniell's actions to other SPCA critics.
Things only got worse and reached a low with the Cheech incident in June last year.
