The SPCA is in a bit of a quandary. It should be leading animal advocacy and animal welfare, but it can only play catch-up. After a long history of stagnating at the lowest levels of animal advocacy and animal welfare it is at the back of the pack, eating the dust of everyone else. Lifeforce Foundation which booted the zoo out of Stanley Park. No Whales in Captivity that ended the captive Orca shows (while the SPCA attended gala fundraisers with the toffs from the Aquarium). Thousands of feral cat rescuers who do TNR (trap/neuter/release) all over BC (while the SPCA loaned traps to cat-haters and then gassed all the cats brought in, even some that were tame and tattooed). AAS grabbed chained dogs. Even municipal pounds for gawd's sake have led the way in more humane impoundment (the ones the SPCA claimed it was more humane than when peddling its pound contracting services to municipalities).
Not one advocacy issue is left for the SPCA to make its own. That is because the SPCA was so certain of its monopoly that it let its whole market go to the competition.
Wait - there's bats! We haven't heard of anyone doing bat advocacy and rescue. Quick SPCA! grab bats!
