Re: 'Doodles' best of 2 breeds, July 28

Great! I'm sure every animal shelter in North America is thrilled to read about the new "designer" dog that is this week's passion for the hip, carrot-brained crowd.

The problem is, what happens when this amazing group of people with the attention span of a gnat hand the dog over to an animal shelter with the "it no longer fits my lifestyle" explanation?

Owner Jay Strosberg is quoted as saying, "Doodles are designer dogs. They're the newest, sexiest yuppie dog. Everybody's looking to get one" -- seemingly he said this without the slightest embarrassment or understanding of how crass and shallow he sounds.

I ask everyone who would like an animal companion for the family to first visit their local shelter and adopt a wonderful dog -- maybe even last year's "newest, sexiest" one.

As for all of us at the shelters, it's hard to keep up with the followers of the Paris Hilton crowd.
