I had gone to the Vancouver SPCA to visit the available dogs for adoption
and found a roti that I was very interested in. Unfortunately,he had a
sore shoulder and was limping, when I asked about him I was told he had a
rotator cuff injury and wasn't adoptable as there were limited resources
and they were waiting to see if it would heal on its own. I offered to
pay for the surgery and was told my request would be "forwarded" - I
didn't hear and so I left two more messages. Still no response. I went
back down and the dog was gone. I wasn't able to get any information
about where he had gone because of "confidentiality". I was very upset
about this and decided to look elsewhere for a dog to join my family.
I contacted AAS and applied to adopt a dog. I was impressed with the
adoption process AAS had and the fact that they seemed very concerned
about the animals in their care and the medical help they were prepared to
provide. I was able to adopt a wonderful roti cross "Chuck" (after a
great deal of scrutiny from AAS and Chuck) and have supported AAS ever
since. I did continue to also support the SPCA for quite awhile as well
because I thought that as the biggest animal organization in BC
I should continue giving them the benefit of the doubt. Cheech changed
all that, I couldn't believe it when I saw all the news coverage and
realized that something was very wrong when people who worked for the SPCA
were actually risking their jobs for this dog. Then when I read that the
SPCA had fired their employee.... I had had enough, I no longer support
the SPCA and send my donations to AAS instead.
It was NOT AAS that changed my mind about donating to the SPCA - the SPCA
did that all on their own.
