The Burnaby Now
Dear Editor,
On my recent visits to the shopping mall I have been sickened by the amount of animal fur used to trim garments. In recent months some of the large animal protection organizations have released undercover video of cats and dogs in China being killed for their fur. If you have never seen a Chinese dog and cat fur video, please watch one. They can be accessed via peta.org or furisdead.com websites. Be warned they are really awful and what you will witness occurs repeatedly, day after day in China and other locations across the globe in response to a growing demand for fur and fur trim. The horror involved is unimaginable.
Sir Paul McCartney recently boycotted China and in response to this Chinese officials blamed American and European consumers for buying the fur. There is some truth in this, as without a market fur farms would not exist.
Collectively we hold a tremendous amount of power with our hard-earned dollars. As the season of good will is upon us and we wish for ”peace on earth”; before you purchase fur or fur trim for yourself or a loved one, think of the sentient creatures who suffer unimaginable abuse, never knowing any peace before being inhumanely killed to provide you with their coat. Anyone selling fur or fur trim and anyone purchasing it should be aware of their complicity in this awful industry. It can only be referred to as shameful and it saddens me that in the 21st century we haven’t progressed beyond this barbarism.
Merry Christmas,
Susan L. Hearsey
