Whoa there, Christie, no need to get nasty

Whoa there, Christie, no need to get nasty. From what you say, it sounds like this accident was just like a car or motorcycle accident. It was unfortunate, but these things happen, and we should just get over it.

Sadly, there are 3 pretty significant differences:

1. A horse is not a piece of technological equipment like a car or a motorcycle, but a living, breathing animal that feels fear and pain.

2. Unlike the people involved, the horses have no option to say no. They are forced to run to the very limit of their ability on a crowded track with several other horses, while pulling a wagon, all the while being whipped by the driver to push them even harder. All these factors increase the likelihood of accidents.

3. The chuckwagon race is a completely unnecessary event put on for the idle amusement of the viewers, and at the expense of the horses’ comfort and safety. If it had any value at all, you might have a slightly better argument.

Sorry Christie, but I’m firmly on the side of the “nutcases.” And proud of it.
