Should we be eating equine?

Our family is vegetarian. We believe it is wrong to kill animals for food. Especially when the Earth is so abundant in other sources of protein. But, if you are going to eat cows, rabbits, chickens, pigs and lambs, why not horses or dogs? What difference does it make? Surely if it is not immoral to eat those animals as well. Is it only appalling if it's an animal we like?
People who judge others that eat horses or dogs need to examine their ethics. Remember that it was once socially acceptable to denounce homosexuality. Morality is very much a changing thing in this world. If it is wrong to eat horses then it should be wrong to eat cows. If you want to enjoy lamb for supper tonight then leave the horse-eaters alone.
