Hamilton-Burlington SPCA has rescued 80 puppies and adult dogs from across the Southern U.S. that were headed for certain euthanasia.

The dogs are the progeny of thousands of canine pets left homeless and unsupervised by Hurricane Katrina two years ago. The dogs were to arrive yesterday evening after almost three days confined to cages in the back of a truck.

"It's better than death," said Glorina White, manager of adoptions and animal care for the HBSPCA. "When we unload them, they're scared but their tails are wagging. We have the resources and technology" to deal with the dogs, White said. "With our Meet Your Match program, we do more adoptions and have fewer returns than anyone in North America."

They average more than 200 animal adoptions per month and offer after-care, such as obedience training, when a pet owner runs into problems with a newly adopted pet. "We recommend coming up in person and taking one of these fellows for a walk."
