It seems an awful thing to say but, death is probably a welcome relief to some of these poor souls. They are finally free from their chains, free from starvation and beatings, free from abuse, and for the females, free from having litter after litter of puppies and not having the strength to nurse them properly. Living in the north, it broke my heart to watch the misery of their existence. Some spent their whole life existing on a 2 foot chain to which they were bound until the day they died. A doberman chained 24/7 in winters where it dipped to 40 below with the wind chill factor. It just made no sense to me and I still have nightmares 25 years later.
