The contract with the Nanaimo pound that was not followed

A contact was awarded to the Nanaimo Animal Shelter Ltd. in the council meeting held on January 24 2005.

This contract was for three years, with a possible extension to the end of 2009, which presumably has happened. So the contract will probably be up again in next January 2010.

From p.129-152 there is a long section on the pound. It's a fascinating read. The personnel consists of Dan Hughes (president), Helen Roberts (manager), Graham Arnold, Gary Thiel, Carol Pilkins, Matthew Purchase and Dale Rausch (who has worked for 28 years with the RCMP).

Here's one interesting item from the contract, p. 120

2. PROVIDE FOR EUTHANASIA BY MEANS OF LETHAL INJECTION, THE COST OF WHICH WILL BE BORNE BY THE CITY EXCEPT IN THE CASE OF INJURED ANIMALS WHERE AN OWNER IS IDENTIFIED.

There is no mention of a gas box as a form of euthanasia.
