Killing dogs to protect the public not the SPCA's mandate

The SPCA is going to inceasingly find itself in the hot seat because of its dog control contracts. These contracts are to protect the public from dogs and have nothing to do with its mandate to protect dogs from people. But they are worth a lot of money.

Killing dogs to protect the public is one of the reasons that so much of the public mistrusts the SPCA. Yet, in spite of AAS telling the SPCA for over five years that dog control contracts are unethical for an "animal welfare" organization to hold, it still hasn't given up this contracting business.

If it wants to continue to be a part of the BC animal welfare community, it will eventually have to give this contracting business up, just as it has had to make other changes under the pressure of bad P.R. like the article above.
