CHILLIWACK - Sandi McGill had to turn away three cats this week due to a lack of space at the Chilliwack SPCA.

There are between 40 and 50 cats living at the shelter on Hopedale Road. Most of the organization's cages are full and that demand is placing a burden on the society's food stocks.

The storage room where animal food is kept is packed with plenty of dog food, and sufficient amounts of canned cat food; what's in short supply is the dry cat food.

McGill, chair of the Chilliwack branch's community council, describes the shortage as "critical."

Given that there are so many mouths to feed and that kitten season is quickly approaching, McGill is making a plea to the community for dry cat food.

"We're desperate. We're having kittens soon. It's kitten season," McGill said.
