Complaint to the BC SPCA re live crab and lobster sales *PIC*

To ALL Members of the SPCA Board,
=================================
On March 27th, 2006, I sent you the letter below, to which I have received
an acknowledgement, but no response.

I believe that your organizations should take the time to respond to letters
and phone calls from the public, as your reputation is being seriously
damaged by your evasiveness, which I have experienced myself on numerous
occasions.

As a former volunteer corresponding secretary of your Penticton Branch (for
6 years), as one who has adopted many animals from your various shelters,
who has donated many items to your thrift stores and blankets and food to
your shelters, I believe I deserve responses to my queries.

I have recently phoned The SPCA in Surrey to complain about the miserable
conditions of crabs sitting 4-6crabs high in tanks at the Save-On Food store
in South Point, South Surrey and was told a constable would be sent out to
inspect. I was never informed about what happened or changed there and I
still see those crabs and lobsters, tied up as if they were already food,
all on top of each other. Attached are 2 photos of the SaveOn Food tanks.

I would like to know if and why you would not consider this to be cruelty to
animals. In my opinion it IS. The fact that these live animals are
supposedly being fed and have shelter in that they are sitting in a pristine
tank, some 50 crabs in a small tank, should not mean that they do not
deserve the help from an organization such as yours which professes to want
to prevent cruelty to animals.

I believe the SPCA has done a lot of good for many animals.
I also believe that you have overlooked a huge number of animals that
desperately need your help too.
If the SPCA decided to dole out less money to the Executive or to expensive
lawsuits against other animal organizations, but instead used all monies to
truly help those who cannot speak for themselves, I would be back supporting
you financially.
As it is, I think your organization is doing mostly rescue work of animals
who have already been abused, but you certainly seem reluctant to actually
prevent cruelty to animals!
Why???

Hoping that I will receive a response to these letters,
I remain,
Yours Truly,

Madelon Keij,
S. Surrey, B.C.
