Orphan Cougar ‘Helena’ to Die if $22,000 is not Raised in 3Mos!

“Helena” orphaned cougar was rescued by well-meaning residents after the Kelowna wildfires in April 2004. The scrawny, frightened kitten hardly looked like a cougar, but more like an overgrown housecat. However her ferocious attitude left no doubt as to what she really was.

NLWRS considered her an ideal candidate for rehabilitation, as she did not show (and still doesn't) any inclination to like being around humans. Once she had grown into a beautiful cat the centre approached the authorities for a release permit. Unfortunately the regional Kelowna office that allowed ‘Helena’ to be rescued denied her release and present regulations do not allow wildlife to be released into another region that may be more sympathetic.

Now at 3 years old, time is running out for the large cat. The authorities say that Helena will have to be killed if the centre can not raise the needed $22,000 in 3 months to build a larger permanent enclosure. NLWRS has contacted zoos and refuges to find a home for Helena but there is no market for cougars as they reproduce well in captivity.

Northern Lights Wildlife Rehab Centre receives no government funding and has only been a non-profit society for 3 years though have saved hundred of animals, including bears, deer, moose etc… over the last 15yrs. They are now appealing to corporations and the public to help them save Helena. A major donor would be recognized by the use of their name on the enclosure. The cougar would become the main focus of an important educational program at the centre.
