In March this year AAS was asked to help spay and neuter the dogs of a young Kamloops family whose husband was out of work at his profession and was making a minimum wage. The dogs had produced a litter of puppies and the family did not want that to happen anymore. The cost at the local vets being completely beyond their means, they applied to the SPCA for assistance and were shocked to discover how little help the SPCA PAL program would be to them. The SPCA would contribute $30, the vet would contribute more, but they would still have to pay from $100 to $130 per dog.
AAS paid the owner's portion of the bills and also had one of the dog's skin conditions treated. Surely in a place where so many dogs and cats are killed for the only reason that there are more of them than there are homes, the SPCA should do better than $30 an animal for those who truly need the help? Perhaps if the SPCA put more toward these deserving cases, other groups like AAS would be able to afford to help more often.
