Rabies Scare Stops PetSmart Adoptions in Maryland

I know that very few rescue groups do any rabies vaccinations prior to adoption. It is an intra-muscular shot which veterinarians have to administer. I had to pay to get them for all the cats I have adopted over the years. They came from three different local groups.

Vets pay just a dollar or two for the vaccines, so it's hardly a big budget item for places where animals are held to get them done prior to sending them to their new homes. As this is clearly a public health issue, rabies shots should not considered to be a large profit maker. Just a basic fee should be charged.

I would like to see all groups giving their animals rabies shots to protect people from this horrible disease and above all to protect the animals themselves and other animals. If you have the misfortune to introduce a rabid animal into your home, you can lose all your other pets and your own life can be threatened.
