The only difference between Daisy Duke dying after being dragged behind a truck with her head in a bag and all four legs bound and the puppy that is chained in the backyard for ten to twelve years is the amount of time involved in suffering.

I would hope by this juncture in human experience that we as a species are coming ever more close to realizing that psychological suffering is as difficult, if not more so, as physical pain.

The cow that knows she's going to be "slaughtered", the chicken in the battery cage, the fish in the hold, the celebratory turkey about to have his head lopped off, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera, all experience intense pain. We are so unaware that we do not seem to mind all THAT pain.
