This once a year event by the SPCA with its press releases is a tiny drop in a huge bucket

Those of us who are deeply involved in actually preventing over-population look at this announcement and truly wonder why anyone would care.

This once a year event by the SPCA with its press releases is a tiny drop in a huge bucket. In past years about 15-20 cats have been handled at this event at the Vancouver SPCA clinic. One day. Once a year. 15-20 cats.

However there is one part that is notable: "...and to address any medical issues the animals may have."

Finally, an SPCA spay/neuter program where more than JUST spay/neuter is done. Usually anything other than spay/neuter is at the cost of the owner so cats who come in infested with fleas go home infested with fleas. I have never understood the logic in this. Cats with anything wrong (even seriously wrong) have been sent home with those things untreated unless some other (little) organization pays... and they do!

The people who need spay/neuter assistance can't afford to treat disease either, so someone has to pay for this.

Hopefully other BC SPCA spay/neuter programs could be altered to ensure cats that are spayed/neutered go home healthy rather than just sterilized.
