Poor little pit bull was put down

SPCA sets sights on 'whoever inflicted this pain' on starved pit bull

A search is under way for the owner of a starving pit bull found wandering in Surrey.

"This is one of the most disturbing cases of animal abuse I have ever witnessed," said Eileen Drever of the SPCA. "The dog was completely emaciated, the skeletal outline clearly visible."

Drever said the one-year-old, tan-and-white dog was found yesterday in the 17800-block 57th Avenue. The dog had wandered into a walkway between two houses and was found comatose.

A resident took the dog to the SPCA, where it was assessed and euthanized. An autopsy of the dog is scheduled.

"We want to know if the dog was starved to death or whether it had some other underlying condition," said Drever. "Given how long the dog's toenails were, it looks like it was being neglected."

Drever hopes neighbours will provide information that could lead to the owner being charged with animal cruelty.

"Tragically, it's too late to save this dog from the cruelty she suffered, but we can work to ensure that whoever inflicted this pain is held to account," she said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Drever at 604-709-4670.
