Cat named Broccoli still counting lives
Published: Thursday, February 22, 2007
It appeared Broccoli the cat had used up his nine lives.

The year-old abandoned cat was examined at the Mission Veterinary Clinic and, at first, a parasite infection or asthma were suspected.

But after a few weeks Broccoli was not getting better.

X-rays were ordered and veterinarian Susan Calverly found that Broccoli's intestines had migrated to his chest cavity.

He had either been run over or kicked in the abdomen, bursting a hole in his diaphragm and forcing his intestines into his chest.

An emergency operation was performed and, despite some tense moments, Broccoli pulled through.

"We are thrilled for him," said Danielle Allen, executive director of the Fraser Valley Humane Society

"He's in great shape now. But we are in desperate need of donations to help pay for Broccoli's surgery."

Broccoli, Allen said, is "like a new cat" and will be available for adoption this weekend.

She added that many other cats are also available.
