FARMED AND DANGEROUS

BC Farmed and Dangerous Salmon campaign launched
Wildcanada.net Action Alert -- 085
Friday November 1, 2002

Synopsis

Chefs, scientists, fishermen, and conservation groups on both sides of the 49th parallel joined on Tuesday October 29th to announce the launch of an international campaign to educate consumers and retailers about the environmental and potential health risks associated with the production of farmed salmon. For more information visit http://www.farmedanddangerous.org to learn more and to send a free fax to five of BC's largest aquaculture companies asking for improvements to their salmon farming operations.

Background

The Coastal Alliance for Aquaculture reform (CAAR) is a coalition of conservation and First Nations groups working to protect the ocean and humans from the dangers of farmed salmon. The coalition is asking consumers to "Think Twice about eating farmed salmon" saying that consumers need much more information to make informed choices about this product. Farmed salmon is produced using pesticides, antibiotics, and chemical additives to alter the colour of the fish, and most consumers know nothing about this. CAAR asserts that people often don't know that the salmon they're buying is manufactured and not a wild fish.

Take Action

We urge you to send a fax directly to the salmon farming industry asking them to reform their practices so that salmon farming can become safe for humans and safe for the ocean. Visit http://www.farmedanddangerous.org to use Wildcanada.net's on-line Action Centre found there.
