Lorrain Chiandro, Nanaimo SPCA, thank you...

A Happy Tail of Five Legs

As many readers know the year here in Nanaimo has been marred by two ghastly incidents- the sheep carnage by the pack of dogs, and the hanging of Lady, the Lab cross.

There are good things happening here as well. We can thank shelter manager Lorrain Chiorando for making such an effort to help cats with major problems. She really went the extra mile.

Stumper is a great, magnificent fellow. The poor little thing had both his rear legs deliberately cut off. A kind local rescue lady took him to the SPCA. Euthanasia seemed to be the only solution, but when he started purring, he was totally irresistible! He was sent to Applecross Veterinary Hospital, where he was patched up at great expense to the SPCA, even though the veterinarians offered good rates for his treatment. Loving owners were found who have fixed him up with special bootees- fit for a king! They are so proud of him. His parents bought him into the vet’s office for a brag session last week.

Darling little Felicity was at the SPCA, as a resident in Lorrain’s office, for many months. How she survived the abusive situation she came from, I do not know. She had a rear leg cut off right at the top. She also had major skin rashes. You just had to look at the diminutive little beauty and she purred. My husband and I drive for the SPCA. We were asked to take her to the vet for her treatment. Well, the vet’s office was on the way home, so after her shot, we decided to take her home to spend the lunch hour with us. It was a long weekend, so there was no point in sending her back to the shelter, was there? The next weekend, the same thing happened. Anyway, she wormed her way into our hearts, so she’s now living with us- a ray of sunshine in our lives. She runs and jumps really well! She has no skin rash any more. She spends her night cuddling right in to the nearest body available.

Thanks to Lorrain for not giving up on these wonderful little creatures.

Jean
