We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of the BC SPCA. :

Dear Editor,
I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say the BCSPCA is not accountable to the animals and public. Papa says, "If you see it in the newspaper, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is the BC SPCA accountable to the animals and public?

Virginia Critic

Dear Virginia Critic,

Your little friends (critics, supporters, workers) are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except what they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, the BC SPCA is accountable! As certainly as (shelter and rescue workers) love (the animals) and generosity (from the donors) and devotion (by volunteers and staff alike) exist, you know that the BC SPCA thrives to give its upper echelon the highest standard of living. Alas! how would be the world if the BC SPCA were not accountable to the animals and public! It would be as dreary as if there were shelters where animals live in inhumane conditions. There would be cramped cages, shelters begging for food and community help to make a tolerable existence for the animals. There would be; no public access financial records, meetings held behind closed doors and members without a right to vote or question the actions and direction of the BC SPCA. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight (visible proof). The external light (blind faith) with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe that the BC SPCA is accountable to the animals and public! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire enough men and women to care for the animals, but even if you did not see the BC SPCA spend money to support the work, what would that prove?

Nobody sees how the BC SPCA is being accountable, but then what sign is needed to prove this. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the animals welfare supporters that ever lived could tear apart. Only (blind) faith, ambiguous memos, threats of law suits and expulsion, can push aside that curtain to see the truth beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No BC SPCA accountability! Thank God! they demand unquestioning loyalty. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, they will continue to try to make you believe they are accountable to the animals and the public, not just to themselves.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!! (Editor Note: Virginia, after speaking to the BC SPCA's official media representative for their position on this matter, I have been notified that your membership is being cancelled.)
