My letter to the Editor sunopinion@png.canwest.com

Dear Editor,
It is interesting that the January 30th paper has a story about a puppy mill raid in Port Alberni and a story about dog breeders (in the business section, no less). This points out the continued attitude that living creatures are commodities, to be bought and sold with little or no consideration to their futures.
As a person who had found homes for abandoned animals for more than a decade, I am appalled that breeders will ship off dogs, even pregnant ones, across the country or world, to strangers. Even screening a new home, home visits, and follow-up, can't ensure that the animal will be given the kind of life it deserves for all of its life.
Ms. McKay can be assured that many breeders will follow her lead in buying and selling these designer dogs for profit.
