Canada is one of 18 countries involved in an international sting operation targeting the illegal trade in wildlife medical products.

Interpol's Environmental Crime Program organized the month-long operation called Operation Tram.

Interpol said in a statement from France on Friday that the investigation resulted in a series of arrests worldwide and the seizure of thousands of illegal medicines involving the use of endangered animals such as tiger, bear and rhinoceros.

Interpol official David Higgins says that the illegal trade in endangered wildlife is a threat to the planet's biodiversity.

Besides Canada, some of the other countries involved in Operation Tram include Australia, France, Ecuador, India, Georgia, the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.

Further details were not released.
