Tofino Humane Dog bylaw in the offing - congratulations Crystal Kerr! *LINK*

I spoke to Tofino district staff today and the office has contacted Lion's Bay for info on their bylaw. If council receives the info package before Feb.24 (next council date), the bylaw will be discussed publicly. They'll contact me asap. At least I'm being kept in the loop. Crystal

An information package from Crystal Kerr calls for a new dog treatment bylaw. She encouraged council to respond proactively to prevent incidents such as the dog attack on Shenica White in Vancouver.

Kerr wants council to adopt a bylaw to prevent de-socialization of dogs due to prolonged tethering, similar to the municipality of Lions Bay.

The Lions Bay bylaw does not allow chaining or tethering of dogs. Additionally, pets must be provided with controlled, periodic exercise free
from a confined area.

Kerr is concerned about a specific dog in Tofino. She has contacted the district and the BC SPCA with her concern.

The district is responsible for animal control, but Mayor Al Anderson said animal confinement may be beyond district capacity to enforce. "There
may be smaller steps that can be taken to help," he said.

Councillor Shaw said the bylaw should allow the district to respond on a case by case basis. Staff will contact Lions Bay, including its bylaw
officer, to provide council with a report on the bylaw and its success.
