Parksville fire fighters rescued a family dog Thursday evening after a fire tore through the front room of a house on Stanford Avenue West.

All occupants escaped from the burning home, including a second pet - a cat - said deputy fire chief Marc Norris.

The only injuries suffered were by one home owner who had smoke inhalation while escaping and a fire fighter with a minor burn on his hand. Another occupant was treated for nerves, Norris said.

Norris said the fire, which started at around 6:30 p.m., is under investigation and the Parksville fire department will be looking into the cause.

The blaze caused extensive damage to the front of the house.

The dog, Norris said, was found in the furthest room from the fire, where the door was partially closed. The small stature of the dog also helped save its life, he added.

"It's a nice outcome, to find the pets alive," he said.
