Charges laid against fish farm

Alexandra Morton scored a win last week when charges were laid against Marine Harvest, the largest fish farmer in the province, by the federal government.

The charges stem from two incidents, one in which juvenile wild pink salmon were allegedly mixed in with farmed Atlantic salmon last summer. The second allegedly involves herring discarded from pens in the fall.

According to the charges, the company failed to report incidental catches of wild fish and, once they were caught, failed to return them to the ocean in a manner that would cause the least harm.

The company has been charged with unlawful possession of wild salmon and herring and are next scheduled to appear in court on June 22.
