The Marmot Recovery Foundation is the group that is supposed to be helping to preserve the marmots.

They say on their website that the BC government is responsible for the culling programme. However, I could find no condemnation of the culls and at least one director of the foundation has spoken publicly in favour of them.
Directors of the Marmot Recovery Foundation:
Virginia Aulin: TimberWest Forests
Stan Coleman: Weyerhaeuser Canada (CHAIR)
Linda Coady: Weyerhaeuser Canada
Doug Janz: B.C. Water, Land and Air Protection
Stuart Prescott: Bentall Corporation [Real Estate]
Rick McKelvey: Environment Canada
Is it surprising that the responsibility for the extermination of the marmot is not placed on the lumber industry, but rather on the hapless wolves and cougars?
The Nanaimo River used to have a large healthy marmot population until a massive programme of clearcut logging was started- just another long and complex story in the ruination of our river systems.
