Action Alert - Wild pink salmon infected with sea lice from fish farms

Wild pink salmon infected by sea lice from salmon farms
Wildcanada.net Action Alert -- 104
Thursday March 6, 2003

Pink salmon smolts are being killed by the sea lice infesting the fish farms along their migratory route off the Broughton Archipelago in the north east portion of Vancouver Island. By continuing to operate during the period when pink salmon are migrating, salmon farms are threatening the survival of the wild pinks. Results from preliminary research conducted by the Raincoast Conservation Society in the region recently found that at least 50% of the young pink salmon examined were infected with enough sea lice to kill them. The samples were gathered in an area that the federal and provincial governments proclaimed a 'safe migration route'.

To learn more, or to take action urging the companies operating the fish farms in the Broughton Archipelago to get the farmed fish out of the water in time to save the pinks. Go to http://www.wildcanada.net/farmedanddangerous/fax.asp
