It is a mistake to ever call a pound a shelter. A true shelter does not kill even one inhabitant. Animal welfarists should not fall into this trap.
Anyone who runs a pound and calls it a shelter is using the latest deliberate and deceitful marketing trick. The name whitewashes the dog and cat killers. It misleads the uncomprehending public into thinking that this nice place looks after all our dear furry friends. Many pounds are going even further by calling themselves animal welfare shelters. Far better were the honest labels of pound and dog catcher. There was no bones about it, they chased, caught and killed dogs.
The public needs to know that this is still being done: done because it is a lot cheaper than enforcing animal welfare laws and breeding controls. The old way of doing the business of animal control and disposal hasn't changed, but the name has. That is fraud.
