What I don't understand is, from what I know Surrey has the largest isolation unit in the lower mainland, MOST shelters have kennel cough, I know that Coquitlam & Abbotsford had it recently and if they euthanized for it, ALL the kennels would be empty. Kennel cough is something that happens in a shelter environment, it's also a simple cold. Why would someone want to kill a dog over a cold? Why would the manager rather euthanize than find a foster home? Yes
kennel cough is contagious but rarely will it effect a healthy dog. Every dog I have rescued from the SPCA has come into my home with it, my dogs who are healthy and strong haven't come down with it. WHY is kennel cough such a huge concern? If Big Heart Rescue was doing tests why wouldn't the manager wait to see what the results were?
Did these dogs see a vet? I know there is a vet tech in Surrey, wouldn't they know the difference between distemper and kennel cough? When was the last time we saw a case of distemper in the lower mainland?
I also wonder if the dogs could have gotten it from being vaccinated? They do vaccinate every dog that walks in the door, I have seen dogs get the disease from the actual vaccine?!
Just a few weeks ago the Surrey SPCA went out of their way to help a Doberman pup with severe mange, which can be expensive to treat and a long healing process, why could they help Penny but not 6 dogs with a cold? I didn't hear one plea for these dogs.
