Winnipeg to ban exotic animal shows

Dear Mayor Glen Murray,

I am writing in support of the proposed ban on wild and exotic animals performing in circuses in Winnipeg.

It is our experience in Kelowna BC that in today's informed and compassionate society the majority of the public no longer tolerates the abuse of animals confined to a miserable life of cages, chains, whips and bullhooks, a stressful and constant part of life in a travelling circus. Now the emphasis is on public education and the importance of protecting animals in their natural habitat, not exploiting them for our entertainment or personal gain.

Successful and respected service groups and charities raise mega dollars for their worthy causes without lowering themselves to exploit animals. In many communities the Shriners are changing with the times. The Winnipeg Shriners also have other fundraising activities, you don't need to be cruel to animals to be kind to children. As well as a reputation for other activities; last year the newspapers reported the Winnipeg Shriners partying at a hotel convention with lap dancers.

I sincerely hope the city of Winnipeg will be added to the growing list of proud communities across Canada who no longer support the cruelty and abuse of animals in the circus.

Kelowna BC adopted the Wild and Exotic Animal Prohibition bylaw in March 1999 and we are proud of it!
