Demonstration at Greater Vancouver Zoo: Saturday December 4th 2004 12:00pm - 2:30pm

Saturday December 4th 2004 12:00pm - 2:30pm

I'd like to share with you an initiative that a WSPA supporter is undertaking. Jan Olson, a concerned and motivated citizen, is organizing a demonstration outside the Greater Vancouver Zoo to bring attention to animal welfare issues in zoos.

ZooCheck Canada, a WSPA member society, issued a report in 1997 detailing inferior and inhumane conditions and provided the zoo with recommendations for improvement. Although the zoo promised to make the improvements, a follow up in 2003 showed that few of the promises have
been kept. The full report is available at
http://www.zoocheck.com/programs/zoocheck/zoorep.shtml then click on "Broken Promises? A report on the well-being of animals at the Greater Vancouver Zoo".

The zoo is located at 5048 - 264th St., Aldergrove, British Columbia, 500 meters south of the Trans Canada Highway exit #73.

The demonstration is being organized by WSPA supporter Jan Olson. As this is not a WSPA initiative, if you want more information please
contact Jan directly at janolson@telus.net .

Not in Vancouver? You can still help zoo animals.

Co-incidentally WSPA has just published Barren Cages, Empty Lives: Roadside Zoos in Canada and launched a Roadside Zoo Campaign. A roadside zoo is usually a smaller operation that pays little regard to the welfare of the animals that are held there. If there is a small zoo in your area please visit our site to learn about the welfare issues, the lack of enforceable legislation, and the potential health and safety problems. If you are concerned about your local zoo, visit the "what you can do" section for ideas on how you too can make a difference. http://www.wspa.ca/roadsidezoos.html
