It would be a good idea to copy your letter to the Canadian Association of Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA). This group recently stripped the Greater Vancouver Zoo of its accreditation, making them unable to participate in breeding programs with other zoos. Please direct your letters to CAZA President Bruce Dougan at bruce.dougan@moncton.org It is unclear how effective writing to CAZA is going to be in this case, given that Alex Graham of the Calgary Zoo is also the Vice President on the Board of Directors for CAZA. Yet another example of the conflicts in self-regulated industries.

Mr.Graham says criticism over breeding this elephant again is "utter nonsense..." yet many of the critics are elephant experts who have studied Asian elephants for years, and know far more about this issue than he does. If the Calgary Zoo wants to address the problem of a declining population of Asian elephants, then perhaps they should lead in the fight to save them where the root of this crisis exists: in the wild elephants' homeland. Reproducing more elephants in an unnatural zoo environment means further generations of suffering in captivity for these wonderful creatures.
