Harvey Hippo dies at Vancouver Zoo *LINK*

GOOD BYE, HARVEY!

The Greater Vancouver Zoo is very sad to announce that on the morning of January 17, Harvey, the male hippo, was found dead in his heated barn. He was taken away immediately to the provincial Animal Health Centre for a complete post-mortem to determine the cause of death.

"Preliminary results indicate that Harvey had a twist in his intestine. Unfortunately, this condition could not be prevented or treated; and is similar to severe colic in a horse." said Dr. Bruce Burton, Harvey's veterinarian. This condition can affect many animals in any stage of life including a healthy animal such as Harvey.

Harvey has always been healthy and was in the prime of his life. Therefore, his sudden death came as a shock to all that worked at the Zoo.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo staff and management are greatly saddened by Harvey's death as he had lived at the zoo for almost 20 years. Harvey
will be greatly missed.
