Why I don't trust the SPCA

MY DEALINGS WITH SPCA
Going back to middle 70's..

Young cat under tree, having problems giving birth, phoned SPCA, I was told to just leave her alone, that she would know what to do.(Behind our place was bush area, many cats dumped). SPCA just assumed she was a feral. Man that owned mobile park and my self wrapped her up and took her to Vet. She was not feral. Vet had to take kittens. None survived. Vet figured she was about 7 mo. old.

Then the pup in Port Moody (1980), tied in back yard (from the time it was 8 weeks) of a house that housed 5 men (always drunk). They would always give him the boot as they walked through yard to back door. Neighbours phoned SPCA continually because he was always being booted or smacked and whined all night. It was the neighbour that kept going over and filling his water bowl, from the time he was first brought to the yard. SPCA always gave that pat old answer - he had food, water and shelter. His shelter was an old suit case propped up. Finally one neighbour took the pup at 4 mo. and I ended up with him. When I got him he was suffering from a sever bowel infection.

Then Tara. (1986) People at the end of our street skipped out and left dog tied to tree in Jan and it was very cold that year .As soon as we realized they were gone we went over and fed her and got some straw for her ramshackle dog house. Phoned SPCA. Again told as long as she is being fed and has shelter and water we can't touch her. We explained that it was us that was feeding her, but they stood firm. What the SPCA jerk told us was to stop feeding her and giving her water for a week, then they might be able to do something. This in an extremely cold January and the dog was only 8 mo. old. Another big dog at my house.

Then the dog on Morrison St. Again, people moved and left a dog tied to a dog house in back yard with a litter of puppies. Mother dog had been tangled up in her chain for several days, puppies were running about and getting into the lane, and mother dog frantic, as she can't reach them. SPCA was phoned. Came down looked over fence and left. Next day the SPCA was phoned again. They came down this time and left a notice on the front door and went in and untangled her and again left, never even left any food for her or filled the water bucket. This dog disappeared over night, neighbours all claim to me they know nothing about her disappearance.

Late 1980's, in our cul-de-sac a man has a male Doberman (not neutered) . He bought an unspayed female purebred Doberman from SPCA and bred her to his male and sold the pups. They sure did not do a home check there. They did not make him spay the dog as their sales agreement says. In fact, when I told them what he was doing, they didn't care.

In the fall of 1998 woman across street from me got 2 pit bull puppies from SPCA, both female. From the time they get them they are getting out of yard, and neighbours are complaining. SPCA is called at least once or twice a week with a complaint about them. By 5 months they were already showing aggression towards people who went out to chase them out of their yards. The son takes one dog. When the mother's dog reaches 7 months, I ask her about getting her spayed, she says she's going to but has no time to get her to Vet. Now by this time the dog is jumping the fence with no problem. So I phone the SPCA and I inform them that this women got the dog from them and its that time for it to go into heat and it's always running loose, and asked why didn't they not enforce the agreement she signed to have the dog spayed. They came out and talked to her and left. Well nothing got done, so I phoned again and when I ask why they are not doing something about her getting this dog spayed, I'm told the dog is her property, and all they can do is charge her extra for the dogs license. I'm told they can not enforce anything, as the agreement that is signed at the time you buy the dog is not legally binding. By this time I'm having nightmares about this poor dog getting pregnant. The woman's excuse to me for not getting it done is she has no time to get her to Vet. The son is always visiting with the sister dog, who is getting very aggressive. I talk to Judy Stone and ask her for advice. She tells me if the woman will consent AAS will pick the dog up take it to the Vet and have it spayed and deliver her back to the house. She agrees to let me do this. But of course she has no money to kick in and the SPCA tells Judy's Vet that the certificate has expired. So AAS foots the bill. The other dog is still not spayed. And lo and behold the son shows up with male Pit bull, and leaves it there (this one came from the Vancouver pound). Within 6 weeks SPCA are forced by RCMP to remove the male dog from the home after they bit the children. And they euthanized it. About 3 months later a stabbing took place in the house and sent one young male to hospital near death. That's who the SPCA sells pit bulls to!
