The SPCA seems hell bent on destroying itself and that would be tragic for animals in BC

Last month AAS posted this item...

Mr Daniell is wrong, AAS is not hell bent on destroying the SPCA

The SPCA's lawsuit has caused us to go through a lot of old, forgotten material and it is all very usable.

In this email to an SPCA donator, who was upset that the SPCA had not prevented the death of a Dalmatian in Surrey, found frozen on the end of its chain, BC SPCA CEO, Craig Daniell accuses AAS of being hell bent on destroying the SPCA.

If we are forced to court, we will have a copy of everytime we said we do not want the SPCA to be destroyed, we only want it to do real animal welfare, and we probably have 20 -30 instances where we have said this.

We said many times, that we did not expect the SPCA to reform quickly, that it could take ten years, but we wanted to see that it was being honest so that we could trust it to reform. In my opinion, it has been even more dishonest since saying it would reform, especially in the way it is enforcing the PCA Act.

Mr Daniell's email...

First of all, we did not ignore any of the complaints with respect to the animal in question. That is an absolute lie by an organization hell bent on destroying the BC SPCA.
Secondly, since I have been with the BC SPCA we have raided and closed down more than 15 puppy mills in the province and taken into our care more than 500 animals from such situations.
Thirdly, if we euthenize an animal, which is not very often, it is done using the most humane methods of euthenasia recommended by the CVMA and the BC VMA.
I challenge you to get your facts straight.
As for deleting the Society from your will, I have to say that someone so poorly informed about the Society's work should not be donating to the Society in the first place.

The SPCA seems hell bent on destroying itself and that would be tragic for animals in BC in my opinion. If the SPCA is foolish enough to force us to court (and it is amazingly foolish so it might) it might finally destroy itself. That is not what I have ever wanted and I have said and written that many times. I have talked to many critics of the SPCA and most of them say the SPCA is not ever going to be honest and it is not going to stop being self-serving and start serving animals, and that there is nothing worth saving.

I may be the only SPCA critic who does not want it to be destroyed. All I have ever written and said is that I want the SPCA to be honest, because if it is honest, it must do real animal welfare because honesty permits no other course. I have said and written many times that I want a financially strong SPCA so that it can honestly prevent cruelty and do honest animal welfare. Since saying it would, in November 2001 in its Community Consultation Report, it has consistently chosen more dishonesty. I have the proof of that as well as the proof of its prior fifty years of dishonesty.

In fact, the SPCA is now worse than it used to be because it has added dishonest cruelty prevention to dishonest animal welfare. After decades of permitting the most horrifying cruelty by not using the Act, it changed its tactics and began making grandstanding seizures for the media, we believe in reaction to AAS's exposure of the way it approved of the vilest of puppymillers and wouldn't prosecute them, telling them that they were breaking no law, in effect keeping them in business.

The SPCA started to make grandstanding seizures for the media which garnered hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations. It made monsters out of innocent people and ruined their lives. And then it abused and neglected some of the animals it seized (some to death), and destroyed the lives of the breeders that it had kept in business for decades. Many of these people had treated their animals more humanely than the SPCA did after it seized them. Vets and lawyers all over BC know that the SPCA is doing this to animals to enrich itself and describe the SPCA in strongly opprobrious terms such as liars and schemers. Terrified cattle and horses and dogs are stuffed into dirty, hot trucks and jolted for miles to secret locations. This causes far more distress to animals than the surroundings the SPCA "heroically rescues" them from. Then it sells the animals back if the owner will pay, and if not, it sells them or kills them. There are rumblings from angry vets, in part because the SPCA is not paying its vet bills, but also because vets know that seizing animals is often more abusive of the SPCA than any abuse by the owners. And frankly, it is using the vets' money to try to silence AAS. Vets are not too pleased about that.

Just recently it added gagging owners of secretly seized animals so that they can't talk about the money the SPCA demands to be paid or the animals will be killed. Serious indeed. One lawyer called that an abuse of the justice system. It seems that the SPCA abuses a lot of people and animals. It really needs to be watched and so far government has shown no interest, forcing little AAS to do the job of acting in the public's interest and survive the SPCA's multi-million dollar machine on its own.

Other lawyers have used the same term to describe the multi-million dollar SPCA suing a private individual using the threat of the financial ruin of that individual. How can the SPCA expect to flourish or even survive when it is led so badly into actions that destroy it?

Let them collapse, as they will, if they continue as they do now
