Dear Sir,
I recognize the cases described in Ms. MacLellan's story to be the same cases taken to The Vancouver Sun by a former employee and myself in April last year. Ms. Barbara Yaffe wrote about what we described in the April 29th paper. I take issue with the quote from Mayor Corrigan: "It's always difficult to assess the legitimacy of complaints". There were colour photographs, photos of x-rays from vet's clinics showing broken limbs, and detailed documentation including dates, times, names and names of the SPCA authorities to whom it was originally reported. If such documentation does not support the legitimacy of complaints, I am at a loss to know what would.
An individual central to the episodes of neglect was transferred by the SPCA to another shelter. I went with the former employee to The Sun because I feared the animals would not be treated with the compassion they need by this person in any shelter. There is no hatred here. There is merely the expectation that the SPCA make the animals its highest priority. Over the last several years I reported problems to SPCA management and did so in a courteous fashion. I have made constructive suggestions and offered my time. All I have ever heard back is "thank you, we'll get back to you." They didn't get back to me. This organization is not accountable to anyone whatsoever.
